And cold and calculating is her stare
She howls to the ripening crescents of light

And of all the creatures standing within day and night
Her howl is an eerie, deceiving truth
She smells of wood and leaves
Of crisp hardened snow and of winter
Her cries carry over heights of entire mountain summits
And echo as deep as valley and glacier fissures
Her eyes hold the mahogany of ever changing leaves
And she is soft and bristly as pine
She moves with the speed of an avalanche stampede
And stands with those whom every Winter would face
She knows not of the extent of love
Or how it lives on after death
She only knows of the changing seasons
Of hunting, of running and of stealth
Of new life and of diminishing health...

I tried to open my eyes because the inner vovk knew it must be early dawn, but my eyelids were glued shut. I pawed at my eyes, smearing away the crystal beads that had formed there overnight.
It was too bloody cold here.
I stood up slowly, wincing as my stiff muscles cracked underway. But I saw no sun, only the darkness that reached into my den. And the pile of snow that had gathered there; blocking my way out.
This is it. I thought sourly. This is where I suffocate to death.
But rather than the sense of fear and urgency, only anger withheld me. I set to work pawing my way out; not caring if there was even an end to the snow. What met me on the other side? Was it worth it to paw my way out if there was no Spring?
But inwardly I knew that Spring wasn’t even close to approaching. Winter had barely started.
